ABORTION CLINIC REGULATIONS

In a recent article in the New Yorker Magazine, titled "The Mistrust of Science" ,Dr. Atul  Gawande, professor of Surgery and Health Policy at Harvard Medical School, talks about how the public often will ignore the science such as the myths that vaccines cause autism, guns make people safer and climate change is a hoax. However, the integrity and credibility of the Board of Health must rely on scientific data to make the important decisions that will determine regulations. In terms of women's health centers, oral surgery offices, endoscopy centers, etc.. safety and quality regulations should be consistent. To place onerous regulations on one type of service, abortion clinics, and not others would smack of political influence especially when the safety records of abortion clinics are equal to or better than other types of facilities. I believe that the data should dictate the regulations. In addition, I also support the Governor's recommendation which extends the ability to record pregnancy estimates to " a licensed healthcare provider" (and not just a physician ) which in most cases will be specifically trained registered nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. If these healthcare providers are able to work in ICU's, ER's and OR's , they certainly can estimate pregnancies.  I have full confidence that the Board will act in the best interests of the citizens of Virginia.
