I think people misunderstand what actually happens at veterinary teaching hospitals. Each student (a 4th year veterinary student- they go through 4 years of schooling) is under the direct supervision of a licensed professional from the time the animal walks into the door until the time they leave. No 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year student is in the hospital "practicing" on your pet. A history is taken by the student, then they refer back to the clinician, then the clinician gets a history as well. If any treatments are done, they are done with a clinician or LVT in the same room for help. There is always a clinician or intern in the hospital at ALL times, and there are always LVTs staffed to provide ICU/ emergency/ overnight care. If you don't want a student to "practice' on your pet then don't bring them to a veterinary teaching hospital. You can't be that ignorant to think that coming to a teaching hospital means that a student won't be helping with the treatment of your pet. That being said, at the time of paperwork a consent form can be signed stating that the owner understands there are students at the hospital and they will be hand on with their pet, although it's pretty much common sense in my option. If you don't want students "practicing" on your pets then don't bring them to a teaching hospital.
