Voter IDs

The Virginia AFL-CIO stands opposed to the proposed SBE regulation excluding expired IDs. Our democracy is healthiest when more people participate and have a stake in the political process. We cannot afford to continue to add voting restrictions that push people out of the electorate. The State Board of Elections got it right the first time when it said it would allow expired IDs.  Some of the accepted IDs do not contain expiration dates; this change sets up an inconsistent application of the statute.

In order to verify someone’s identity, you need an ID with a name and photograph. This proposed restriction (the third in as many years) will not only add unnecessary obstacles to voting, but also confuse voters for no good reason.
