I work at the polls every election. I would like to know that the voters I am checking are who they say that they are. Some of the proof that I have been required to accept seems sort of nebulous. Given the requirement to prove your identity to cash a check or board an airplane, it does not seem onerous to require a similar level of proof to help determine who will lead our country. Using the misleading charge that this is disenfranchising minority and poor voters makes me wonder about the motives of those making the charges. Would they prefer no identity check at all? Then those so inclined could do as the old Chicago joke goes "vote early - and often".si
