As a student who has taken Honors English classes since middle school and intend on taking AP English classes in the future, I support the Board of Education's amendment to the regulations when it comes to advance student and parent notification, identifying books, offering alternatives, and opt-out options.  When sex is taught in the FLE classes, notification, meetings, online help etc. are offered along with opt-out options.  If explicit sexual themes are in the English classroom whether through books or discussions, the same should happen.  Including a line on a 7 page syllabus (that most parents have to find online through blackboard) that states some books may contain sexual or mature themes is stupid and worthless.  Identifying which books (especially when a syllabus contains about 25 possible books) contain sexually explicit material would be helpful, and then the student and the parent can do further research.  Video games and movies provide short descriptions or themes and so should assigned books when it comes to extreme sex and violence. This process is not too much work for the teacher since they already know what the books contain.  It would be too much work for the parent who must research 20 some books for one child and even more books if they have other kids.
