As a student who has taken Advanced Placement English 11 and is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement English 12, I strongly disagree with the proposal at hand. Literature is used to enrich a student's life as a whole. Think about it, the more we read these "sensitive" or "offensive" topics, the greater chance we have of taking an opinion on the subject and possibly know what to do if the circumstances arise in our lives. In AP English 11, I had the pleasure of reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. The novel in it's entirety is focused on the gruesome murders of a family, committed by two men. Yes, the writing used in the novel is graphic, without a doubt. My main point in mentioning the previous fact is that as high school students, we should be mature enough to the point were we can read anything and take it in as literaure, not a scary movie. The student at hand had "nightmares" about the novel he read in class. A high school senior having nightmares? I think he needs to realize that some things in life are scary, things happen that may not be pleasant all the time, but reading about it can enrich our education greatly. Please reconsider making this proposal official. Thank you.
