Service Facilitators are a vital piece of the care coordination puzzle for families navigating complex medical care for their loved ones. SFs visit in-home and experience a patient’s quality of life and all facets of daily life. They can first-hand see the worth in a patient, the struggles and victories they face, and advocate for their true needs, many of which are an ongoing battle daily. SFs are an independent source of knowledge and are experienced with children, the medical needs of complex cases, and the regulatory requirements and policies of state and federal legislation. They empower patients to navigate this system to set them best up for success and good health
Service Brokers, affiliated with insurance, are NOT likely to be evaluating situations from a patient’s perspective nor are they likely to value personhood, but instead may view endorsement of needed resources through the lens of financial loss to the affiliated insurance company. These individuals may lack critical qualifications, experience, and compassion to ensure patients’ quality of life is healthy and safe.
Moving to a service broker model will greatly harm the quality of life for patients and families, leading to more sickness and critical care (higher cost to taxpayers), more financial strain and poverty (if attendant hours are cut and parents or loved ones must provide unpaid care at cost to their jobs), and less voice for patients in advocacy.
