I get why this thread is so heated, and honestly, the frustration is fair nobody wants to watch their electricity bill creep up or see a giant windowless building show up next to their neighborhood without so much as a heads up. But I think it’s worth stepping back for a second and talking about why these facilities exist in the first place, because I don’t think “big tech greed” is the whole story.

Think about what you did today. Checked your bank balance, texted a friend, pulled up directions, maybe had a video call with your doctor, streamed a show, backed up photos of your kids. Every single one of those things ran through a data center somewhere. They’re not some abstract crypto-mining scheme they’re the plumbing underneath basically all of modern life, including stuff we’d consider essential now, like telehealth, remote work, and school systems that went digital after 2020 and never fully went back.

That’s a real shift in how we should think about these buildings. A well-designed data center can actually feed something back heating for nearby buildings, support for local infrastructure upgrades, sometimes even funding for water systems that end up benefiting everyone nearby, not just the facility. It’s not a magic fix for every issue people are raising here, but it’s a genuine example of the industry evolving instead of just extracting and moving on. And this is what this bill is tackling. 

I just think it’s worth having a fuller picture before writing these off completely. The problems being raised are legitimate and companies should be held to higher standards on transparency and local investment. But these facilities aren’t going away, since they’re tied to how we all live now, so it’s probably more useful to push for smarter, more reciprocal versions of them (heat reuse being one solid example) rather than treating them as pure villains in the story.
