The new proposed standards would not allow reptiles in childcare centers. My school has a turtle, named Herbert, who is beloved by all and our school community would be absolutely devastated to see her go. There is no evidence that salmonella has spread in childcare centers in Virginia due to reptiles. Herbert spends most of her time in her tank, and proper sanitation protocol is followed to keep everyone safe. Having an animal in the classroom provides so many learning opportunities for children. They get to learn about the different types of creatures that make up our ecosystem, and learn to have an appreciation for beings who are different than they are. Kids love to help take care of Herbert by pouring water into her water bowl or dropping food onto her food plate. They feel a sense of satisfaction and pride when they help care for her. Every day, when I turn on Herbert’s mister at the end of nap time, the children get so excited and run up to the tank, pressing their face against the glass to watch. It would be a huge loss for our school if we had to get rid of Herbert and I encourage you to revisit this standard.
