strongly oppose the epi pen use in family day homes

As a home daycare provider, I feel strongly that we should not be required to administer EpiPens, as we are not medical professionals such as nurses or doctors. Determining the appropriate dosage based on a child’s age and weight can be complicated—especially since young children grow and gain weight so quickly. It would be extremely difficult for us to monitor each child’s weight accurately enough to ensure safe administration.

We already face significant challenges finding and retaining staff, and requiring every employee to undergo EpiPen training would add another layer of difficulty. There is also the risk of accidental misuse. If an incorrect dose were given and a parent decided to pursue legal action, it is unclear whether liability insurance would fully cover the situation. This is an important factor that cannot be overlooked.

Additionally, EpiPens expire regularly, meaning they must be replaced, which creates added costs for either the daycare or the families. Considering all these concerns, we strongly recommend that the state not move forward with approving this requirement.

Thanks
