I am a licensed family day home provider in Virginia, and I strongly oppose the proposed requirement for childcare providers to purchase and maintain stock EpiPens.
For small programs like mine, this mandate creates a significant financial and operational burden. Stock EpiPens are costly, expire quickly, and would require frequent replacement. The additional mandatory training—often at the provider’s expense—adds further strain.
This proposal also places medical responsibility on individuals who are not healthcare professionals. Expecting providers to assess anaphylaxis and administer medication to children without known allergies or prescriptions is unsafe and exposes us to serious liability.
While I am committed to ensuring the safety of all children in my care, this requirement is not practical, not affordable, and not appropriate for family day homes. I respectfully urge you to reconsider this mandate.
Thank you for your time and attention!
