The change allowing LRIs to act as paid caregivers has brought stability to our child’s care, providing him with consistent caregivers and reducing his exposure to an ever-changing array of strangers. We no longer feel pressured to disclose his diagnosis in the hopes of finding someone willing to overlook his challenges or, worse, judge him or our family. We strongly advocate for the removal of Objective Written Documentation and the continuation of LRIs as paid caregivers without the burden of proving how difficult it is to find care for minimal pay with no benefits. Additionally, offering respite to unpaid LRI caregivers would be a much-appreciated support for families who find intermittent help but cannot secure long-term care.
