Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, whose leaves contain psychoactive compounds mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These compounds interact with opioid receptors in the brain, producing effects similar to opioids. This analysis evaluates kratom under the eight factors of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) to support its classification as a Schedule I controlled substance.
