Kratom saves, improves lives. A doctor's perspective.

Caffeine, Nicotine, Alcohol - 3 substances that are commonly used, which cause Much more mortality and morbidity than Kratom in the USA (particularly the latter two!)  As a physician (pathologist) in reading the few instances of deaths allegedly caused by Kratom - there is very little evidence that Kratom has even contributed, never mind caused death in anyone. (Certainly not in its natural leaf form.)

Kratom in its natural form - tea, powder - is self-limiting in its negative effects.  Meanwhile, the positive effects - as an anxiolytic, pain reliever that can lead to improved mood, sleep, energy, a safe and effective method of alleviating the very real withdrawal effects of actually dangerous opioids - are almost miraculous.  As a physician/scientist, I dislike terms such as 'miraculous' when it comes to supplements; in this case, I will use it.

I would support the regulation of the production and extraction of Kratom compounds; these 'extracts' are to Kratom, as caffeine-containing energy drinks are to Coffee.  Extraction and increase in concentration of these individual compounds could potentially be harmful. However, if you are to regulate Kratom in its entirety, in this natural leaf form, you would be depriving the citizens of Virginia (and eventually, the US) of a very helpful substance.  Please learn from the failure of prohibition; if Kratom was banned, this would not solve a drug crisis - it would force users to seek out an illegal substitute, which would inevitably lead to further crises and loss of life.

Sincerely,

Dr. R Hopley
