I urge the VMRC to institute depth restrictions on the use of purse seine nets. This gear is not being used appropriately in the Bay, and employing them in water depths shallower than 60' is causing damage to crucial fish habitat. Implementing restrictions on the use of this gear, to depths where the science says it should be used, will not only avoid habitat damage and bycatch, but net spills and tears, outcomes that all stakeholders will benefit from.
Sincerely,
Ryan Delaney
