Menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay

The time to step up and do the right thing has come. Virginia needs to stand with the other eastern seaboard states and stop harvesting menhaden within a three mile limit of the Virginia shore line and outside the Chesapeake Bay. Menhaden are vital to the survival of osprey and the recovery and return of the fishes that feed on menhaden. Studies have shown that the offspring of the osprey has dropped dramatically in Virginia as a result of the lack of sufficient numbers of menhaden. States along the north east that have taken me measures against how and where menhaden are harvested report increased numbers of game fish returning to their areas in direct response to the increase in menhaden. This in turn has led to the increase of tourism of people vacationing and charter fishing in those states. Hopefully, Virginia will wake up, stand up and start working to be good stewards of our beautiful Chesapeake Bay and all the resources that are being over fished.
