Undermining Parental Expertise and Caregiver Autonomy

The limitations placed on parental involvement as compensated care attendants disregard the invaluable expertise they possess and undermine their autonomy as caregivers. Parents are uniquely positioned to understand their children's complex care needs and preferences, ensuring individualized and tailored care. Restricting their involvement in caregiving roles undermines the principles of patient-centered care, jeopardizing the quality and effectiveness of the care delivered. It is essential to recognize and support parents’ significant role in caregiving, foster their autonomy, and actively empower them to participate in their children's care journey. Promoting parental expertise and caregiver autonomy can enhance the overall care outcomes and satisfaction of both the children and their families.
