Virginia State Forest Regulation 4VAC10-30-170 should be amended to allow concealed carry permit holders who possess a valid permit to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense within Virginia's state forests. As a former law school professor in our Commonwealth, I can assert accurately that the qualifications review process for a Virginia concealed carry permit is sufficiently rigorous that only bona fide outstanding citizens with no relevant or material record of any legal misconduct will qualify for issuance of the permit. Such citizens provide a positive safety net in our state forests rather than any detriment.
