As written, the Model Policies are so vague as to sow confusion and fear in our teachers, librarians and administrators. We’ve seen in other states with similar legislation and policies that books by and about LGBTQ+ people in particular have been severely restricted, if not prohibited entirely. There are students who are struggling with their sexual orientation and gender identities. They need information and affirmation that they are not broken and they are not alone. Their peers exposed to such books will learn to be more accepting of those students different from themselves and the people they meet in life after graduating. The same applies to books by about other minorities. Virginia should and must do better for our students. All of them.
