I am a current public librarian, former teacher, mother/stepmother of 6 and grandmother of 8 and I do not support this bill at all. 

First of all, this legislation does not meet a real need.  Teachers are not filling their curriculum with sexually explicit material.  There is not an epidemic of porn in our classrooms. Books and other materials (fiction and non-fiction) selected for use in the classroom are chosen by professional educators because of the value they see in those materials.   Parents should not be second guessing teachers' professional judgment. 

Second, this opens the door for Boards to declare any mention of LGBT individuals as 'sexually explicit' thus relegating a significant portion of Virginia's population as somehow unfit to be mentioned in a classroom.  Consider the impact of this on students who themselves are LGBT or come from LGBT families.  These students need to be supported, not made to feel like their very existence is somehow obscene.  

Finally, public schools exist to serve interests of the public as a whole, not to cater to individual parents.  Public school curriculum should not be used to impose what is clearly a religious-based view of sexuality on the rest of the state.  It is in the best interest of all Virginians to leave decisions regarding public education in the hands of public educators.  Parents who want their children to be exposed only to their own ideas and concepts of sexuality should choose homeschool or private school.
