Because this bill leaves the terms sexually explicit open to parent interpretation, this bill could be used by schools to remove books that portray queer stories. Labeling lgbtq individuals as sexually explicit is a tactic that has been commonly used to stop children from learning about queer history, and it is crucial that lgbt books are available to read. This is important not only for queer students such as myself to read and feel represented, but also for other students to gain a better understanding of the world they live in. Queer history is American history, and it needs to be available in schools across Virginia.
