Senate bill 656 is giving a parent the option to opt out of particular reading materials and requesting other materials if they are uncomfortable with an educator's choice.

If you don't want your child to read a particular book or learn about a specific event in US history, then you have that right to request YOUR child be exempt from the lesson; however, MY child, by my choice, SHOULD have that opportunity to read a particular book or learn the uncomfortable history and ramifications of a historical event.

When I was in school, we learned about all sorts of subjects, read many books which put all people in good and bad light, and even managed to get through the initial health classes that were introduced in my 8th grade year. And none of us suffered from any of this. If anything, it expanded our horizons and enabled us to see differing viewpoints.

Trying to impose one's morality on everyone else because one doesn't like people different from them or with differing perspectives is only going to further divide this state and nation. It will also lead to the further erosion of public schools - but maybe that is the ultimate goal.
