It is fairly obvious that teachers should know how to properly interact with students. Basic cultural competency is a critical part of that. For example, I have a unique ethnic name and have had interactions my whole life where a new person I was meeting has made an off-hand comment or joke that was intended to be funny but was actually a microaggression. If all teachers were trained in basic cultural competency, they would know not to make such comments and could ensure that other students also don't. As someone who was raised in Virginia public schools, I support this fundamental measure.
