Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

This is necessary and important!!!

CRT is meant to help teacher understand the diverse backgrounds of the children they teach . This requirement is not “divisive” rather it is acknowledging that they are cultural differences and learning to respect them and in turn teach the future generations to respect those who are different from them. CRT is meant to create a space that ALL feel welcome and can flourish in and unfortunately right now in schools many teachers lack knowledge of other cultures and in turn do not give all children what they need to grow. VA has a history of oppression and CRT is meant to address the implicit bias and ignorance a lot of people have. It is meant to teach children to be respectful which I think we can all agree is extremely important.
