Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Yes. Cultural competence should be a requirement

First of all cultural competence is in no way racist it’s actually ironic that individuals would comment this as it operates to do the exact opposite. Furthermore cultural competence training is prevalent in higher education for students …for obvious reasons- it should be a requirement of all teachers. We live in a society that is internationally active meaning not only are Americans made up of so many different cultures but we also are active in our participation of international relations- for this reason cultural competence is essential and it should be for both student and teachers. This type of training only progresses our levels of education it can only be beneficial to our learning environments.
