Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Mixed family supports this endeavor for cultural training

We are in full support of this law for teachers to get additional training just like they would in any subject. Understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in an area as different as Northern Virginia should be the norm, not an exception. As NoVA property residential owners with family and friends all over the state we have experienced first-hand how divided even one neighborhood can be on education. We can’t move forward together without fully understanding our differences. I would encourage everyone who believes this type of act is “CRT” to research that CRT is taught in graduate school—not elementary, middle, etc. We are asking for our children at a basic level to be taught the difference between being black, white, Asian, Hispanic or other and grow up with more appreciation for our differences not so they can be ridiculed. Best of luck to the teachers and their pursuit of furthering their own continuing education.
