Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

I support cultural competency training for all teachers! It’s so important!

Teachers have a huge impact on children’s lives and can make or break their futures. Small moments that teachers might be oblivious about can literally be remembered by the child for their entire life and have an impact on self image and so many other possible effects. This is why cultural competency training is SO important for all educators because they have such a big role in children’s lives. I’m glad Governor Northam made this into law in Virginia and hope it continues to be a requirement and that good trainings are developed and improved year by year. This is crucial for providing the best education and supporting the development of all young Virginians.
