Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

YES to cultural competence in education!

Cultural competence is imperative for educators in the 21st century, especially in a state as diverse as Virginia. Students benefit IMMENSELY from knowing the unabridged truth of history, and contrary to the beliefs of some, this education does not divide children along racial lines. I strongly support cultural competence and knowing the full truth, and people who vehemently oppose the teaching of critical race theory should question why they disagree with it. Support cultural competence in schools!
