Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Support cultural training for FCPS teachers & staff

Hello, I’m writing to voice my support for cultural training for FCPS teachers. I graduated from AHS in 2015 and VCU in 2019. I have taught middle school students in France and elementary students in Panama. I currently reside in Fairfax county and Olán to send my kids to FCPS one day. It is incredibly important for teachers to have some knowledge and understanding of the culture(s) their students come from so they can reach them best and avoid alienating them. At a school like Annandale High School where students’ families come from over 80 different countries, it is essential for teachers to be trained to deal with various cultural phenomena that they might not be familiar with. It makes the most sense to avoid hindering the learning and educating process and deliver the best quality education to the students. Please support increased cultural competency training for our educators in FCPS.
