Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Cultural Competency Training is Essential - It’s Training to be a decent human being

The fact that this is even being questioned is ridiculous. Cultural competency training will make teachers aware of the diversity of the students they serve and will help them best serve this population. Without this training our teachers are failing any student not in the white majority. Critical Race Theory is not racist. You cannot be racist against white people (a majority), and that is not even what this law is suggesting. This conversation is not about CRT, but even if it was, my support of the training would not change.
