Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Vote no to implementing critical critical race theory into Virginia‘s requirements for teachers. As a 32 year veteran of Virginia public schools, I taught in schools that were beautifully culturally and economically diverse. The children loved each other, learned together, and had no thought of blaming each other. Critical race theory is poison. It takes us back 50 years at least and asks us to return to a dark period while we teach children that they are perpetual victims or perpetual aggressors. That’s offensive to me and to anyone who values freedom in our country and understands historically the progress that we have made through many great sacrifices and heroes. Don’t poison our children. Here’s an idea: teach them reading, writing, and math. That is your job. You forget, and that’s why our schools rank so low internationally in these core subjects.
