Expanded Benefit Option will help Virginia, not hurt

I am amazed at the depth of intolerance and ignorance expressed in some of the comments opposing expansion of state benefits to an "otherwise Qualified adult" in the home.

Health insurance is not about marriage; it is about making sure that every human being has access to health care.  Right now, those without health insurance cost taxpayers and society dearly in medicaid (paid for with public taxpayer money) and in medical charge-offs (money that doctors and hospitals cannot collect because patient cannot pay, causing medical costs for everyone else to increase).  Under the proposal, for qualified adults, whether homosexual or heterosexual, living with and dependent upon a state employee, the cost of providing insurance shifts from the taxpayer (medicaid) to the employee, saving the state money, not costing more.  Unlike families of married couples, the "qualified adult" will not have the state subsidizing any portion of the insurance cost.  The only thing this proposal does is create an insurance option for those who otherwise might have no option.

The state will also benefit from providing benefit options that will attract and retain qualified employees.  At a time when state employee salaries are frozen, a good benefit package may be what keeps a knowledgeable, skilled employee on the job, rather than looking elsewhere.  It is just good business sense.
