As a former member and chair of the UVA President's Committee on Benefits, I can validate that a request to extend benefits to unrelated adults has been discussed, approved and recommended by faculty/staff over the last ten years.
To be competitive for the best talent in the sciences and arts, UVA must offer benefits comparable to other world class organizations. I support Governor Kaine's approach: this offering would not be at taxpayer expense.
