I strongly support expansion of health care insurance benefits for the household members of state employees. This proposal won't cost taxpayers anything, because the employee will pay the entire, unsubsidized premium for otherwise qualified adult household members. Actually, it will save taxpayers money, since people who otherwise would arrive at emergency rooms uninsured and be provided care at the state's cost will instead be able to purchase insurance and receive preventive and primary care from family doctors. This expansion would better enable our colleges and universities to attract top-quality professors who currently reject even Virginia's most prestigious schools because of the lack of benefits. Permitting uninsured Virginia residents to purchase health care insurance is a win-win scenario for taxpayers, governmental employers, and the uninsured and underinsured.
