This admendment would be a step closer to equality in the way the Commonwealth provides compensation and benefits to its employees.   There was a time when single women were paid less than married men for the same work ("because they did not have a family to support").  We no longer see such a pay differential as fair or just.  In the same way, there should be no discrimination in benefits based on marital status.
