This action is long overdue. Now that we have the proposed language, I hope that some of the earlier commentors will review it and reconsider their objections. This expansion is both constitutional (based on Bob McDonnell's June 7, 2007 opinion) and virtually cost-free. That 16 other states, 152 city and county governments, and 308 colleges and universities around the country have similar benefits should tell us that this day has come. Virginia needs to remain competitve, which is why so many college and university presidents support it and why so many Virginia businesses have already adopted similar benefits.
