Governor Kaine has announced that he wants to extend healthcare benefits to domestic partners of state employees. My husband and I will celebrate 20 years together in January, but if he died tomorrow his 30 years of VRS retirement benefits evaporate. Because we’re denied the basic civil right of marriage, I’m not qualified to collect them. This extension of healthcare benefits is the first step in helping Virginia move in a more equitable direction.
