Board Description: Old Dominion University offers over 150 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees, including 22 doctoral degrees and two educational specialist degrees. The main campus is located in Norfolk, Virginia, with extended higher education centers in Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, and Hampton. The board of visitors is authorized to make regulations and policies concerning the institution. Code of Virginia, Title 23.1, Chapter 13. The board of visitors or other governing body of every state-supported institution of higher education in Virginia is authorized to adopt regulations or institutional policies for the acceptance and assistance of students; for the conduct of students in attendance and for the rescission or restriction of financial aid, suspension, and dismissal of students who fail or refuse to abide by such regulations or policies; for the employment and dismissal of professors, teachers, instructors and other employees; and for parking and traffic on property owned, leased, maintained or controlled by the institution. The board of visitors or other governing body is required to establish policies and procedures regarding a dependent student's receipt of mental health treatment at the student health or counseling center under certain circumstances and regarding the release of a dependent student's educational record. The board of visitors or other governing body is authorized to establish programs, in cooperation with the Council and the Office of the Attorney General, to promote student compliance with state laws on the use of alcoholic beverages and the awareness and prevention of sexual crimes committed upon students; to establish guidelines for the initiation or induction of students into any social fraternity or sorority in accordance with the prohibition against hazing as defined by ยง 18.2-56; to establish policies and procedures requiring the release of the educational record of a dependent student to a parent at his request; and to establish policies for the discipline of student athletes who participate in varsity intercollegiate athletics and annual report to the governing board any enforcement actions taken pursuant to such policies, promote the awareness and prevention of sexual crimes committed upon students.
