| Purpose of the meeting PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the first Community Engagement Meeting to address the water quality impairments in the Clinch River, Little Stoney Creek, Staunton Creek, Fall Creek, Russell Creek, Lick Creek, Laurel Branch and Cigarette Hollow watersheds on January 28th, 2026, at 3:00 pm. The meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate. The meeting participants will assist in the development of a cleanup plan, also known as an Implementation Plan (IP), to address bacteria impairments in the Clinch River, Little Stoney Creek, Staunton Creek, Fall Creek, and Russell Creek watersheds and both benthic and bacteria impairments in Lick Creek, Laurel Branch and Cigarette Hollow watersheds. The proposed Lower Clinch River IP watershed is a part of the Tennessee/Big Sandy River basin, which drains via the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. These segments have been listed in Virginia’s §303(d) List of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an exceedance in bacteria (E. coli) and sediment. The meeting will discuss recommendations on implementation strategies, outreach, funding opportunities and begin discussing the draft report. Information about this plan can be found here: https://www.deq.virginia.gov/our-programs/water/water-quality/implementation/implementation-plans-under-development. In the event of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on February 3rd, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at the same location stated above.
