Purpose of the meeting
A Department of Environmental Quality public hearing on the draft permit for a major modification for the Greif Packaging Industrial Landfill located in Amherst County. Greif Packaging LLC has applied for a modification to a permit that allows the Greif Packaging Riverville Mill to operate an existing landfill in Gladstone, Virginia. This modification to the permit would allow lowering of the base grades in Cell 4, changing the groundwater sampling method, changing of the leachate collection system from gravity discharge to side slope riser in Cells 3 and 4, removal of the partial cap in Cell 1, increase in the side slopes to 3H:1V, and an increase in overall landfill height to 130 ft. The changes will result in an increase in landfill capacity. The draft permit is available at https://www.deq.virginia.gov/permits/public-notices/land-protection on the DEQ website. The public may also review the draft permit and application, by appointment, at the DEQ Blue Ridge Regional Office, 901 Russel Drive, Salem, VA 24153. The public comment period begins on June 15, 2023, and ends on August 3, 2023.
