| Purpose of the meeting PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the first TMDL stakeholder meeting for the Hat and Black Creek TMDL on March 1, 2023. The meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate in the proceedings. Meeting participants will assist in development of a cleanup study, also known as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), to address benthic impairments of Hat and Black Creeks in Nelson County, which have been listed on Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an altered benthic community. TMDLs will be developed for sediment in both streams and phosphorus in Black Creek, which were identified as probable contributors to the poor health of the stream segment. The meeting will discuss the results of the benthic stressor analysis, land cover estimates for the watersheds, and the process that will be used to establish TMDL endpoints.
