Summary |
The Tax Reform Act of 1986 established the federal Housing Credit program to encourage private
investment in affordable housing. More specifically, the federal Housing Credit is a dollar-fordollar reduction in tax liability to the owner of a qualified low-income housing development for the
acquisition, rehabilitation (“rehab”), or construction of low-income rental housing units. The amount
of credits allocated is based directly on the number of qualified low-income units that meet federal
rent and income targeting requirements. |
