The way in which a BCBA is trained on behavior is well suited to serve those who are experincing issues with behaviors like addiction.
As an LBA in Virginia, including us as providers for Substance Use Disorder treatment could work, but not without a structure in place. Closing a gap in service provision is warranted, however, as treatment of substance use disorder is only under the scope for some, most behavior analysts do not get specific training in the medical and pharmacological elements of substance use disorder. For this to be included in the scope of behavior analysts, specialized training, should be required. It could be structured similarly to the 8 hour supervision training that the BACB requires to supervise trainees. I believe that this is essential in particular due to the elevated risks of treating someone (up to and including relapse or death), with SUD once they have gone through withdrawal. A specific additional training series or credentialing pathway would offset this risk, while closing the treatment gap.
