Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

Gross abuse of the educational system

These standards are an atrocious and objectionable abuse of the public education system for ideological and political purposes. Public school is not the place to teach controversial and ideologically driven opinions on morality to students. If traditional religious teachings on morality have no place in public education, then certainly neither does this filth.

Secondly, we cannot teach our kids to define others or themselves by group “identities”. This will only serve to establish a systemic divide between people. We are all individuals and should be valued as such, not in terms of arbitrarily constructed group definitions. I will not allow my children to be taught that their "group" defines them or anyone else as more or less than any other person, is more or less capable or deserving of the opportunity to excel in life.

Make no mistake, these standards amount to nothing less than the institutionalization of racism and an overt attempt to indoctrinate children into a dogmatic, secular moral system.
