Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

SEL is not new!

As a mental health professional in the schools, I'm so excited to see SEL in the spotlight. School professionals have already been providing instruction in this area for years by integrating it throughout the school day, teaching guidance lessons, and through counseling supports. I hope this means that staff will get the structure and guidance to unify language and supports at the school and district levels, as consistency is so important for our students. Teachers deserve supports as districts increase teaching these skills more explicitly at the general classroom level. I'm also hopeful that we will be able to work alongside parents as students work on and use these skills across settings. This is about supporting their development! Difficulty with these skills can often interrupt our students' access to instruction so I believe continuing to work on SEL will not only help their development as children, but also help them as students to access and engage with the traditional subjects in school.
