Guidance Document Change: The 2020 Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 753 directing the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to develop guidance standards for social emotional learning (SEL) for all public students in grades Kindergarten through 12 in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Social Emotional Learning Standards were developed in collaboration with an SEL Advisory Committee, composed of educators, community leaders, agency personnel, and parents. The Virginia SEL Standards are aligned with the Profile of a Virginia Graduate and centered in equity. This intentional focus allows the Standards to explicitly teach the skills needed to be “life ready” and to create more equitable learning environments.

terrible actually promoting division and bias please read comment

Do not do this to children. NOT your job. Only teaching the SEL definition of "diversity" and "acceptance" is wrong and damaging. SEL means making sure we teach/ force the students to identify how different they are, what group they belong to, and what privileges they have. Teach them how limited other kids are because of the groups they belong to. Show them how different and unfair everything is. Teach the privileged groups to feel ashamed and the disadvantaged groups to get angry. Even though these group advantages and disadvantages are being assumed above individual experience. Teach them what they should feel regardless of being able to fully understand their individual story. The reality is that there are significant privileges and disadvantages in all groups. It comes down to supporting how an individual identifies and what they face, as an individual. Speaking in terms of labeling a child based on a "group", and all the good and bad that is predetermined to go with that group is biased, racist, insulting, divisive, and limiting.
