Comment on Poultry Litter: Regulation:
As a tax payer and voter I would like to express my concern for the water quality in the Shenandoah River which is just a few miles form my home. I have used the river for smallmouth bass fishing, but now have grave concerns about the fish considering the multiple times that fish kills and outbreaks of lesions has occurred. I know for several years research to find the cause has continually found nothing conclusive of the cause from any source except Poultry litter which remains to some degree unregulated. I support creating regulations of end users and brokers when they use poultry litter as fertilizer. There is now substantial evidence that this type of pollution occurs when litter is unregulated. Only regulations that require proper disposal of poultry litter will allow our rivers to return to the pristine condition that has existed in the past and can exist in the future. The new regulations must guide application rules, proper times of the year to fertilize, and better covering measures to insure heavy rains do not transport concentrated litter into our watersheds. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in helping us to protect this precious resource.
