RE: masks

Although I  keep seeing different people/groups supposedly showing that masks "don't work", the PREPONDERANCE of actual SCIENTIFIC evidence, and even common sense, says that they DO. The evidence DOES show that unregulated/cloth/homemade masks do NOT prevent the wearer from inhaling contaminants, although it may HELP. And, on that score, it also is a reminder not to touch your face when in proximity to others. However, the primary way that masks help prevent the spread of disease is by containing each person's expelled particles to themselves. I am a nurse who has worked with Infection Control at the hospital for 10 years. For long before that even, when we have had potentially contagious patients who have needed to be transported from their isolation rooms through public spaces, we have put masks on THEM, to help contain their germs. In the same way, we put a clean sheet over any draining infected wounds. We use physical barriers that help contain the spread of droplets and other contaminants at the SOURCE, before they spread out and get circulated in the air. These barriers are NOT 100% effective. We move infected patients as little as we possibly can, taking them down non-public elevators and private hallways as much as possible, keeping them away from the general public as much as possible. It just seems hard for people to grasp that we CAN'T protect OURSELVES, except by staying home or using specialized medical gear, but we CAN protect OTHER people by our actions, and THEY can protect (or NOT protect) us! It is the ultimate act of public trust, to set aside our own comforts for the good of OTHERS. I wish the dialogs could be focused on ways to make masks more comfortable and other ways to increase compliance, instead of all these "rebels" who just don't want to, so grasp any straw to support their unwillingness.
