Assigned to a COVID-19 infected Housing Unit

I am a Correctional Officer employed with the Department of Corrections for almost 15 years. I'm currently assigned to a medium security which offenders are housed in a dormitory setting. They're not confined to cells which make social distancing virtually impossible to practice. I recently was tasked with being assigned in a quarantined Housing Unit which an offender is diagnosed with a suspected case of COVID-19.  As the Floor Officer, I have restricted movement: I am forbidden to enter/exit other Housing Units and common areas. The only authorized exception is Staff Dining for break and the Watch Office: (only at the request of a supervisor). I have wait for assistance from a supervisor for institutional count (to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus to other offenders not in quarantined status). I have to feed the quarantined offenders, escort Medical personnel (for safety reasons) while they conduct temperature checks and pill call) while provide them (the quarantined offenders) the necessary cleaning gear to disinfect their Housing Unit. I also am required to conduct security checks twice an hour to ensure no critical incidents exist while on duty. These expectations are being fulfilled with the only protective equipment provided by the state: a cloth mask (state issued and offered to offender population) and a pair of latex gloves. In order to prevent the risk of my family and I from being infected with the COVID-19 virus, I had to purchase (without reimbursement) hand sanitizer and a more improved sneeze guard). It is a lack of empathy for the Commonwealth of Virginia to assigned an officer to an area with an active COVID-19 case without personal protective equipment (PPE) ie: N-95 mask, goggles, body suit/gown, disposable nitrile/latex gloves. It is essential and paramount that the Commonwealth of Virginia do more to ensure the safety of its staff (especially correctional officers) is a top priority. Correctional Officers should not have to endure out of pocket expenses to ensure their safety and their families. Even with the protective measures a correctional officer implements, it does not eliminate the risk of being infected with the COVID-19 virus. It is truly unfair that correctional officers be placed in an toxic environment without sufficient personal protective equipment and being compensated for their efforts.
