Positive Reinforcement for Autism and Behavioral Disorders
My child has ADHD, ODD and is highly functioning autistic. He has a documented IQ of 130.
Kindergarten was successful, and his kindergarten teacher referred him for the gifted program at school. First grade however, has been a nightmare. In spite of his documented issues and my repeated requests for an IEP or 504, my son has not received an individualized program, not been included in the gifted program, and instead has suffered 8 days of out of school suspension, several days of in school suspension, and countless early removals from school due to his frustrated an angry behavioral outbursts. Postitive reinforcement is nonexistent, even though that is the recommendation for children with these issues. He is repeated removed from the classroom, and at times other students are evacuated from the classroom. He has been singled out and bullied by school officials repeatedly.
My son was once a fun, inquisitive boy who loved school. School officials have clearly labeled him a "problem child" and failed to meet even minimal expectations, insisting upon seclusion rather than even conducting timely behavioral assessments. Due to the school's punitive actions, my child has taken nearly 20 different prescription medications since November, all in an attempt for an "immediate cure" for his behavior. At this point he may require hospitalization to detox and start a fresh medical regimen. All because of the school refuses to acknowledge and adopt commonly accepted approaches to these behaviors.
Please help! End restrain and seclusion, require positive reinforcement, and force schools to provide timely adaptations for students with special needs.
